In 2002, Steve, a late 20s-something English software engineer, travelled to Australia for a year after becoming jaded with London and office life – and before he got too old for a visa.He stays on Bondi beach, learns to fly above the Sydney suburbs, creates a website, gets a job farming on a cattle station as a jackeroo on horseback and bike, dives the Great Barrier Reef, and finds himself driving 19 tonne trucks in preparation for a drilling job in the Western Australia desert. Finally, joined by a mate from London, they hire aircraft and embark on a troublesome flying tour of the southwest corner of Australia, diving the wreck of HMS Swan before undertaking a 4,000 kilometre road-trip driving from Perth to Alice Springs. He doesn’t fully understand Australian Rules Football, but enthusiastically follows the rugby league competition, gets a game, ponders the small matter of the Ashes and receives house-sharing offers from working girls and labours as a tree surgeon on Sydney Harbour. He reflects on his adventures working in the IT industry overseas and as a Army Reserve paratrooper. There was not a single tweet or Instagram post in this experienceA must-read for anyone following in the finest traditions of backpacking 'Down Under'.
